The Row’s trove of art, design and clothes
On the unassuming rue Mont Thabor, The Row quietly opens its Paris flagship.
Just a short stroll from the famed Rue Faubourg St. Honoré, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen chose their first Parisian outpost, a former restaurant on a street corner and stripped back the interior to restore the bones of the building, opening up aspects in the discovery process. Working with a cohort of associates, rather than one name designer they reconfigured the space with its bare stone arches and generous windows decorating it with a piquant selection of art, design and artefacts that one could happily transplant into your own home.
The selection, befitting the ethos of the clothes, marries form and function and evades frivolous deco running from a Jean Prouve ‘porthole’ door to Victor Courtray chairs, a Michel Dufet coffee table and a giant weathered wood pillar, and handwoven rugs aplenty. There’s a 1950s style coffee bar with Commune ceramic cups where one might indulge in a quick ‘noisette,’ while waiting for news of the next Margaux bag delivery.
The duo are learning as they go, adapting the display and range to suit the taste and desires of Parisian clients. During Paris Art Basel, there were small but distinct gatherings with collectors and gallerists alike (many in the signature zipper boot) coming to check out the enigmatic world of The Row that was founded in 2006. With recent investment estimated at $1billion from a cross section of concerns including the families behind L’Oréal and Chanel, The Row will now be able to grow in resources and scale. The balance will be maintaining the brand’s subtlety and sense of the unexpected. Chapeau!
