Carven's Next Chapter
Louise Trotter breathes a new lease of life into the French fashion house
Louise Trotter’s debut collection at Carven sees the designer return to the French label’s roots, to founder Marie Louise Carven’s ‘40s vision. “She infused her brand with her personality and spirit which was one of youthful, spontaneous joy,” says Trotter of Madame Carven, who died in 2015, aged 105. “Her love of nature and her optimistic spirit, more than any specific code, defined Carven. We share common values — a desire to create beautiful, purposeful clothes for everyday. Clothes that bring confidence to the wearer. Clothes made with a pragmatic approach, devoid of too much drama and noise.”
As the first female at the helm since the brand’s 2009 revival, Trotter also celebrates womanhood. “I intend to focus on a wardrobe and the woman who wears it,” she says. “And for Carven to be a place for women to connect, to feel seen and be part of a shared story beyond fashion where mindfulness, optimism and joy are celebrated.”
"I intend to evolve slowly and to rebuild this house to become a much-loved home."
This permeates through a collection celebrating the sensuality and strength of the female form. The hourglass shape is accentuated through nipped in waists and hip-skimming satins and silks, organza skirts and bustiers revealing a hint at the underneath, while strong-shouldered blazers and sculptural tops give a masculine edge. Looks are tonal, leaving an overall minimalist aesthetic - a clean slate.
